Swim Lessons

 The YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Program is a seven level program with each level building upon the preceding one, designed to develop more efficient and self-confident swimmers.


 EXPLANATION OF CLASS LEVELS
*Use these guidelines when choosing your child’s class*

 

Under Age 6(Preschool Skippers



Tiny Tots/Parent Child -(6 months – 3 years)

Your child’s introduction to swimming!  Parent(s) and child swim together to establish a sense of comfort and confidence in the water.


Pike - (Beginner)

Pike - (Beginner)This lesson helps children adjust and develop independent movement in the water.  Water orientation is introduced.                                    

Eel - (Intermediate)

For children who are comfortable in the water and can swim 5 yards independently.  Stroke development begins, reach and pull, flutter kick front and back, sitting dive, glides and combined skills.

Ray/Starfish - (Advanced)

This combined class is for children who can swim a minimum of 10 yards unassisted.  Stroke development is refined for front crawl, back stroke, side stroke and diving skills.


Progressive Swimmers
Ages 6 & up
 

Polliwog - (Beginner)

A learn to swim lesson which introduces basic skills for the beginner or non-swimmer to build self-confidence.

 

Guppy - (Intermediate)

Able to swim 5 - 10 yards paddle stroke.  Stroke development for front crawl, side stroke, back stroke, introduction to rotary breathing, defining arm movements with flutter kick and kneeling front dive.                    

Minnow- (Intermediate/Advanced)

Able to swim 10  - 15 yards unassisted.  Skills advance to scissor kick,  elementary back stroke, front crawl with rotary breathing, diving and treading water.

Fish - (Pre-Advanced)

Able to swim 25 yards unassisted.  Stroke development, dolphin kick, breast stroke, side stroke and proper diving positions.

Flying Fish/Shark
( Advanced)

Child can swim 50 yards, front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, side stroke, breast stroke.  Stroke development for butterfly, individual medley (four strokes:  butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke
